WILLIAM JENNINGS BRYAN NO CROSS OF GOLD 1896 PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN PIN NR #506-2Up for bidding: A remarkable example of an 1896 pinback campaign button for William Jennings Bryan, quoting his famous campaign speech, No Cross of Gold, denouncing the gold standard and supporting a move to silver currency. Bryan was the Democratic nominee facing William McKinley. Because of his strong anti-gold standard stance, many Democrats favored McKinley. He did, however, have the support of many Populists. Following two defeats in Presidential elections, Bryan eventually became Secretary of State under Woodrow Wilson. He is known for his strong public speaking skills and impact in the Progressive Era.
