Antique Starrett 12” Firm Joint Calipers marked “L. S. Starrett, Athol Mass, PAT APPL’D FOR”.  They include a transfer feature that allows the caliper to measure the inside of a cavity and be withdrawn without losing the measurement. Starrett patent 539,759 on the lock joint calipers was applied for on Feb 6, 1893 and granted on May 21, 1895.  This suggests these calipers may have been manufactured prior to May 1895.  Also note the  makers mark “L S Starrett” predates the makers mark “L S Starrett Co.”.  Please look closely at all photos before purchasing.
